What is 5G?

The world is going to have a huge evolution in the telecommunication network in late 2019 or 2020.  The 5G is coming.  Do you know what 5G is? 

5G is the fifth generation of mobile wireless systems.  And that is cutting edge technology in comparison to 4G.  5G uses radio waves or radio frequency (RF) to transmit and receive voice and data and connect to our communities.  And your devices will no longer need to send or receive data through plugging into a wall in somewhere at your home or office.

The 5G is an advanced technology with several characteristics.  First of all, all you have heard is about the transmitting speed. For easy understanding about the speed of 5G, you need around 10 more seconds in downloading a full movie.  But for 4G, you may normally need around 6-7 minutes for downloading a movie, in general.

Here we can have a brief review about our different generations.

1G was analog cellular. 2G technologies were the start of using digital cellular technologies.  You may recall CDMA, GSM, and TDMA. About 3G technologies, those EVDO, HSPA, and UMTS brought speeds higher from 200kbps to a few megabits per second. 4G technologies, LTE, the speed is now up to hundreds of megabits and even gigabit-level speeds.

Similar to the encoding that 4G LTE currently using, 5G networks use a type of encoding called OFDM. The air interface of 5G will be designed for much lower latency than LTE. 

But another breakthrough of 5G is that it can connect billions of devices, the Internet of Things (IoT).  The world is connected.

The power of 5G is about the speed, low latency and real connection to the world.   How can you imagine you can have a driverless car to pick up you?  How about the benefits to medical use with the cutting-edge technology through 5G because of the low latency?  Yes, you may think of your mobile phone is not the pure mobile.  It can help you to do the remote services catered for you through the new applications.  In theory, your devices can connect hundred or thousand devices for your daily life.
